Overlook Middle School
Citizen of the Term
by Kristin Belkin, Overlook Middle School
March 2010

On behalf of the SOAR committee, I would like to introduce seven students who have been selected by their team’s teachers and enrichment teachers. These students are recognized as kids who set a good example for others and meet the following guidelines. They all have achieved a 75% average or above in all academic and enrichment classes. None of these students have received any detentions during the term and they all have good attendance. Each has volunteered in and out of the school community and demonstrated effort, positive behavior and leadership among their peers. The following students have been awarded Citizen of the Term for the second term at Overlook Middle School:

Team 6 Blue is very excited to recognize Nate McCartney as Citizen of the Term. Nathan can be described as determined and self motivated. He is invaluable when it comes to helping struggling students in the classroom and his siblings at home. Nate can often be found helping out teachers with classroom jobs and going above and beyond a simple call of help. Nathan loves sports, especially football and lacrosse. He admits that lacrosse has been a challenge for him, but Nate was determined to stick with it. Nathan enjoys school so much he can’t choose any one subject as his favorite. In the future, Nate hopes to go to college in Michigan or Alabama. Congratulations Nate!

Team 6 Green is proud to recognize Evan Samson as Citizen of the Term. Evan is a good student and a friend. He is responsible for for his dogs at home and often helps his younger brother with his homework. Evan’s teachers rave how helpful he is in class. He is often found cleaning up without being asked to do so and volunteering in the library. Evan has also recently submitted written work to Project Write. Evan is very active in sports and he really likes to play hockey. He is a true New England fan and loves to watch the Patriots, the Bruins, the Celtics and of course the Red Sox. In the future, Evan hopes to go to attend Boston University. Great job Evan!

Team 7 Red is happy to recognize Alysia Kinsley as Citizen of the Term. Alysia’s teachers feel that she is an incredible writer in English and Social Studies. Alysia is a class leader, exhibiting kind behavior and exceptional dedication to her school community. Alysia puts 100% into her school work and is dedicated to keeping her grades up and keeping her friends. Alysia has a strong bond with a close knit group of friends and many of her teachers. Alysia looks forward to coming to school each day. She feels that she is always trying to look for the positive in everyone around her and does her best to help out whoever she can. In the community Alysia and her family are involved with the foster care program and Alysia often has to take a lot of responsibility for the kids that come into her home. She understands how important it is to be a big role model to these kids. Alysia enjoys being outdoors, working with horses and hanging out with her friends. Alysia is very grateful to all her 7 Red teachers for giving her this honor. In the future, Alysia will be moving to Virginia. She hopes to become a teacher for the first or second grade. Excellent work Alysia!

Team 7 Navy is thrilled to recognize Jake Dewey as Citizen of the Term. Jake stands out on his team for his willingness to help others. He is a fantastic role model for his peers and is an all around good kid. Each of his teachers truly enjoys having him in class. Jake likes playing basketball in his spare time and he is part of two different teams within the community. Jake hopes to try out for the school baseball team in the spring. He has a passion for design and learning how to put things together. In the future, Jake hopes to go to college and put that passion to work by attending MIT. Congratulations Jake!

Team 8 Orange is pleased to recognize Tanner Gauvin as Citizen of the Term. Tanner’s teacher describe him as an all around good kid, who works hard, is a pleasure to have in class and is willing to help out whenever needed. Tanner participates as a SOAR member and has had an active role in the Yearbook. Within the community, Tanner has played soccer, golf and piano. He also has trained and become one of the extended day leaders during the summer. Tanner admits that there are some days when he just doesn’t want to go to school, but he appreciates that a good education can bring him many opportunities in the future. He keeps high expectations of himself and his friends will attest to the fact that he is an over achiever. Tanner is proud of his past middle school achievements both in science and social studies in which he earned a science plaque and community recognition for his World Fair project. Tanner’s favorite subjects are science and art. He is very interested in Egypt and hopes to visit there someday.  In the future, Tanner hopes to be a graphic designer or go into some field of science. Awesome job Tanner!

Team 8 White is delighted to recognize Emily Albert as Citizen of the Term. Emily is a mature, responsible, caring and sweet young lady. She often puts others' needs before her own. Emily is a model student whose selfless attitude should be emulated by all. Emily’s teachers love having her in their classes. Emily plays several sports throughout the year including soccer, field hockey, basketball and lacrosse. She is an active member in the spirit council and within her church. Emily has recently help coordinate a bake sale for the food pantry in Westminster. Emily is a hard worker and is very proud that she has made honor roll each term. Great Job Emily!

The Enrichment team is glad to recognize Jacob Breau from Team 8 Orange. Jacob is always willing to help others. Each of his enrichment teachers have enjoyed seeing him grow into a fine young man since sixth grade. Jacob actively plays in the position of soccer goalie and he also participates in basketball and golf. He can be found volunteering at his church in the yearly church fair. In the future, Jacob hopes to go to Monty Tech next year and learn the trade of masonry. Excellent work Jacob!
