2010 DIVISION 3A STATE CHAMPIONS

The Oakmont-Narragansett Varsity Ice Hockey Team defeated Holyoke on Thursday, March 11 with a final score of 4-2 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield to win the Division 3A State Championship. The loss avenges last year’s defeat to the same Holyoke team in the 2009 State Final.
The Spartans went down 1-0 during the first minute, but came back to tie only to be done 2-1 at the end of the first period. Oakmont took control during the second period scoring twice and then netted an empty net goal with 30 seconds left to play to ice the championship.
Eric Woodward was the offensive player of the game scoring two goals and adding an assist on Jayson Gauvin’s game winning goal. Nick Carter capped the scoring with open net tally at the end of the game. Aaron Testa had 32 saves and Alex King, Shane Harrington, Matt Foley, Mike O’Regan and Zac Forbes once again held their opponent in check with solid defensive play.
The team ended its season with a 21-1-1 record, the best of any Oakmont hockey team. The championship is the third state title in Oakmont history. The 1989 and 1991 softball teams also won State Championships.
